Yasmin Qureshi, MP for Bolton South East, has expressed her disappointment as Freedom of Information Legislation stops short of including private companies which operate under contracts in the public sector.

Fully backing public pressure on the Government to extended the legislation, Ms Qureshi said:

“It is deeply disappointing that the Independent Commission on Freedom of information has not recommended an extension to the act.

“The Freedom of Information has been indispensable over the last decade and a half, casting light on the darker aspects of Government activity, regardless of which party happened to be in power.

“With more and more private companies and voluntary organisations receiving public money to provide public series, it has become increasingly important to extend the FOI laws to these bodies for accountability and efficiency.”
