Whilst the Government has now declared an intention to end peat burning, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) admits that the legislation it has proposed will protect only 62%, leaving – at a conservative estimate – over a third of this precious natural resource open to burning.

The Heather & Grass Burning Regulations 2021 are an opportunity for the Government to enact the recommendation of the Climate Change Committee to completely ban peat bog burning.  However, the Government is currently squandering this opportunity by backing a half-measure.

I have therefore written to George Eustice, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and asked him to fully support a ban.  You can see a copy of my letter below.
