Yasmin Qureshi Labour Member of Parliament for Bolton South and Walkden

Ahead of the publication of the Government’s ‘British Energy Security Strategy’, I wrote to the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Kwasi Kwarteng, and asked them not to include fracking in the strategy. I have posted copies of these letters below for you to see.
I believe that fracking should have no place in the Government’s energy security strategy or in the UK’s energy sector whatsoever. The previous attempts to frack in the UK ended in nothing but disaster, for local democracy, the environment, and even the fracking companies themselves.
Furthermore, if the Government is serious about meeting its own targets on tackling climate change, it needs to reduce our use of fossil fuels, not burn more of them.
I was therefore relieved to see that the now published policy paper on the ‘British Energy Security Strategy’, does not mention fracking.
