Yasmin Qureshi Labour Member of Parliament for Bolton South East
I am dismayed at how long it is taking to introduce tougher sentences for animal cruelty. I have supported this campaign since 2016 and I am continually disappointed by the delays and derailing of this endeavour.
The Second Reading of the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill has been pushed back again, to 23 October. What makes this more infuriating is that this Bill has cross-party support, including from both the Government and the Opposition, and has huge public support.
I have written to Chris Philp, the Minister responsible for sentencing, and asked him if the Government will commit to ensuring that this Bill is introduced into law this year. I have posted a copy of this letter below.
I can assure you that I will support the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill when it finally has its Second Reading.
