Drop-in Advice Surgeries
I hold a drop-in advice surgery from 10:30am to 11:30am on the first Saturday of every month in the Community Room at the rear of Farnworth Town Hall (entrance via the car park.) You do not need to make an appointment. However, your case will be dealt with more quickly if you contact my constituency office directly. See below for details.
If you have casework or issues, the best way to contact me is via the webform here: www.writetothem.com
The constituency office telephone number is 01204 371202 .
I am able to help constituents with the following issues:
- Tax problems involving the HM Revenue and Customs Department
- Welfare issues dealt with by the Department for Work and Pensions such as benefits, tax credits and state pensions
- Issues handled by the Home Office such as immigration and passports (but I cannot give immigration advice, see below)
- Issues relating to the Department of Health and Social Care such as concerns about hospitals or access to treatment
- Any issues arising from any other government departments
- Issues with utility companies
- Consumer issues
I can support constituents by:
- Writing to the Minister with responsibility for the department concerned
- Asking an official for an explanation of why a decision has been made
- Asking for a decision to be reviewed
What I can’t help with:
- Please note that I am not legally permitted to give immigration advice. For all immigration advice, you should speak to a qualified legal adviser.
- I am not able to countersign photographs for passports or driving licences
- I am not able to provide references for people whom I do not know well.
- My office is not presently able to offer work experience, shadowing or internships
- If you wish to report an immigration crime, such as someone living or working in the UK illegally, employing someone who isn’t allowed to work in the UK, involved in smuggling or involved in illegal immigration, you must fill in the online form here: https://www.gov.uk/report-immigration-crime Asking an MP to report it on your behalf will only slow down the progress of the report and create unnecessary duplication.
Early Day Motions (EDMs)
I don’t usually sign EDMs.
Whilst they may bring an issue to public attention, they rarely have a meaningful effect and there are numerous other ways of effectively raising an issue.
Signing EDMs requires virtually no effort and it has become an easy alternative to writing personally to a Minister, raising the issue in questions or debates in Parliament, applying for a debate, tabling amendments to Bills etc., all of which require much more time and effort. It also costs the tax payer money; there is an administrative cost to the public purse to process and publish the hundreds of EDMs tabled each month.
This is why I have taken the decision not to sign EDMs as a general rule. However, that does not mean the issues raised are not important and instead I write personally to Ministers raising the issues and asking them to respond, as well as raising issues in other useful and effective ways.
