Today I asked the Prime Minister Question what immediate assurance he could give me that our world-leading and international research will be protected in light of the UK leaving the EU. I also asked how the UK government will commit to replacing any income lost as a result of universities not being able to access EU sources of funding, given that this was promised during the Vote Leave campaign.
Our universities are a global success story, outward looking, open for business with the world, and attracting the brightest and the best students and researchers to produce ground-breaking research in areas from cancer to climate change.
In 2014/15, UK universities received £836m in research grants and contracts from EU sources.
