Yasmin Qureshi Labour Member of Parliament for Bolton South East
Back in August 2019, I wrote about my concern that Bolton’s Conservative Council plans to axe the Meals on Wheels Service.
Since then, a new petition has been launched on 38Degrees, so I have taken down my own petition and would urge you to sign and share this one instead: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-the-meals-on-wheels-service-in-bolton
There will be a public meeting at 6:30pm on Tuesday 11 February 2019, at the Friends’ Meeting House, Silverwell Street, Bolton, BL1 1PP.
Bolton Council wants to end the community meals service which delivers a hot meal to some of Bolton’s most vulnerable elderly citizens. Meals on wheels would no longer be provided by the council under new proposals leaving hundreds of local people affected.
Staff working in the service do not just deliver a hot, nutritious meal, they check on the wellbeing of the elderly and alert other services if there are problems, give them social interaction and can help to prevent hospital admissions. They also deliver lunchtime meals to three lunch clubs.
Under-investment puts this group at risk and places unnecessary pressure on the NHS – quite simply, it’s a false economy. The service is cost effective and contributes to older people remaining in their own home.
We call on Bolton Council to scrap the proposal – please sign the petition now.
