I am concerned that pubs have been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus restrictions and will continue to suffer as the restrictions remain in place for the next few months at least.  I sympathise with publicans who are just trying to make a living and play by the rules but are struggling to stay afloat.

As one of the sectors most affected by the restrictions, the Government should have been providing help for pubs and breweries from the beginning of the coronavirus crisis.  However, help has been lacking, and all that is being offered to closed, wet-led pubs to compensate for missing what should be their busiest time of the year, is a one-off £1,000 grant.

The pub and brewing sector is clear that this is not good enough, neither is the Government’s continued lack of action on cutting the UK’s beer duty, which remains the third highest in Europe.

I have written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, and raised the plight of the UK’s pubs and breweries with him.  I have posted a copy of this letter below.

I can assure you that I will continue to push for support for the UK’s pubs and brewery sector, during the coronavirus crisis and afterwards.
