I share the concern that Liz Truss will seek to further restrict the ability of workers to take industrial action, having promised to do so during the Conservative leadership election.

Indeed, she said: “As Prime Minister, I will not let our country be held to ransom by militant trade unionists” and “I’ll crackdown on the debilitating strikes that cripple the vital services that hard-working people rely on.”

Instead of using the Government’s power to help address the causes of the strikes, including the devastating cost-of-living crisis, it seems that the Prime Minister wants to use it to clampdown on workers’ rights.

This is despite striking being one of the very few options open to workers to express their grievances and seek fair pay and conditions for their work, and it being a cornerstone of a free country.

I can assure you that my Opposition Colleagues and I support the right to strike and will oppose any legislation proposed by the Government to restrict this fundamental right.
