Power of Attorney Day 2026
Power of Attorney Day 2026

To mark Power of Attorney Day on 22 April, I am encouraging residents across Bolton South and Walkden to think ahead and consider putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place.

Many people assume that being a spouse, partner or child automatically gives them the legal right to manage a loved one’s finances or healthcare decisions if they become unable to do so themselves. This is not the case. Being next of kin carries no automatic legal authority, and without an LPA in place, families can face lengthy and stressful court processes at an already difficult time.

A Lasting Power of Attorney allows someone to choose in advance who they trust to make decisions on their behalf, whether relating to property and finances or to health and welfare. This is not just a consideration for older people, but something anyone can put in place as a precaution. In England and Wales, registering an LPA costs £92, with reductions available for those on lower incomes. Learn more about this at Carers UK.
