2026 update to constituents
Thank you for voting for me in 2024 for the new constituency of Bolton South and Walkden, building on fourteen years of work in Bolton South East. I wanted to update you on some of the policies the government has introduced.
It’s a privilege to represent Bolton South and Walkden as your MP, and I’m committed to standing up for everyone in our community and
working hard on the issues that matter the most to you.
Issues that matter to you
Housing and Renters Rights
The Government wants to build 1.5 million homes and is investing £39 billion to support new council and housing association properties. The government is also supporting local jobs, with investment in local skills, creating an extra 5,000 apprenticeships a year.
The Renters’ Rights Act gives stronger protections to residents, including ending ‘no fault’ evictions. Leasehold reform will cap ground rent at £250 and phase it out over 40 years.
Road Safety & Public Transport
Since the tragic crash on Wigan Road that took the lives of four people and injured several others, I have
been campaigning for stronger prevention measures, including graduated driving licences and targeted
interventions for high risk roads.
I have also lobbied Transport for Greater Manchester to improve our buses, our trains, and to improve connections
across Bolton and Greater Manchester by bringing the Metrolink to Bolton.
Health
Additional funding to Royal Bolton Hospital has reduced the waiting list by over 7,000, with an extra 25,000
appointments offered.
As Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dentistry, I have been lobbying the Government to increase the
number of NHS dental appointments, with 700,000 more appointments now available nationwide
Education
Breakfast clubs are being delivered in every primary school. All children whose parents are on Universal
Credit are now eligible for free school meals, and £700 million has been committed to urgent school repairs.
I welcome £1 billion allocated to improve Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision.
I held a roundtable to hear the concerns of parents who contacted me about SEND, which I have raised in
Parliament.
Cost of Living and Support for Families
Thirty hours of free childcare, helping parents to return to work. Removing the two child benefit cap has lifted 7,340 children out of poverty locally.
In December 2025, the Government put aside £92.5 million for Bolton and £102.3 million for Salford. This funding will mean cleaner streets, better roads and revived community hubs.
